Cold Expectations describes this track as follows: Two Blueberries is a contemporary take on a fun 70’s-style bubblegum pop song. It’s a love song. It’s about the ordinary, everyday stuff that happens, like a pint of berries spilling out, becoming whole universes and planets spinning around on the kitchen floor. It feels like you and me, spinning out in space. Little things. Nervous things. Bittersweet things. Two Blueberries is also about creating and what I learned about creation; I learned that songs once written can be torn up and re-written, given a fresh meaning. Paintings that once meant something, then mean nothing, well you can un-paint them and get a fresh coat. New beginnings, life and all its weirdness, and the in-between spaces of everyday loneliness and anxiety (just a touch, for good measure).

As a pop song it is purposefully non-formulaic; it was a very important turning point for us as a band. I originally wrote it when we were a more traditional rock quartet, with a setlist full of long, complex, opaque numbers. This new tune I was busting to play was the opposite: it was delicate, light, fun, and short. Just a few simple folk chords strung together. It doesn’t stay inside the lines. But I was stuck as a songwriter; I didn’t want it to become too heavy-handed or overwrought. Well as fate would have it, this tune - and several other short, breezy pop tunes I had kicking around - got their light of day when the band changed up the lineup slightly, parting ways amicably with our lead guitarist (Bob Metzger) in early 2020. So, we were able to quickly downshift into a simplified, stripped-down pop trio. For the initial rehearsals the new band had more of a modern, contemporary feel. And all of a sudden the playbook opened up and we could explore all the open space and delicateness surrounding these new songs, like Two Blueberries. It’s the one we always play last at band practice, because it always puts us in a good mood!
